“New mask, same task”

Robert Downey Jr. is set to make his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but this time not as a hero  but as a villain.

Years after his last appearance as Tony Stark or Iron Man, the President of Marvel Studio, Kevin Feige surprised the crowd when he announced Downey’s return to the MCU as Victor Von Doom or Doctor Doom last Saturday, July 27, 2024 at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Downey’s fans were confused and surprised as he unmasked himself onstage, the screaming cheer of the crowd went wild as they welcomed Downey’s return.

“What can I tell you? I like playing complicated character.” said Downey.

After playing his 10 films, Iron Man died fighting Thanos in Avengers: Endgame and seems to have finished his Marvel career in 2019. Tony Stark died as a hero but Robert Downey Jr. lived to become a villain.

The Russo brothers, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo will be directing the next two Avengers movies that will be released in 2026.  Russo brothers are in early stages of discussion with Marvel Studios to direct Avengers 5 and 6.

The MCU revealed that the fifth Avengers movie was previously entitled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty that will be released on big screen by May 1, 2026 but the project will now get a new name after the incident happened to the actor and was convicted of assault and harassment. The sixth Avengers film is named Avengers: Secret Wars and will be released on May 7,2027.
