The City of Calaca, known for its rich history, cultural legacy, and breathtaking surroundings, is thriving under dynamic leadership. From its humble beginnings based on the name “Kalaka”—a term referring to bamboo halves—the city has grown into a dynamic and active community, famously celebrating its local delicacy through the Calatchara Festival, which showcases its main product, atchara.
Aside from its pristine beaches and attractions, Calaca has received acknowledgement for its extraordinary progress in governance. Mayor Sofronio ‘Nas’ Ona is at the forefront of this development, with his visionary leadership paving the path for Calaca to become Western Batangas’ first component city. His dedication to integrity, openness, and sustainable development was important in the cityhood initiative, which gained tremendous support from Calaca residents, as seen by the high voter turnout during the election to ratify the Charter of the City of Calaca.
Mayor Ona’s administration is driven by the idea that “Nasa Puso at Gawa ang Bukas”—a mantra that represents his commitment to advancement through action. NASA GAWA, his main governance program, aims to empower numerous parts of society through important initiatives:
- NASA ISIP – Education programs
- NASA LAKAS – Health and wellness initiatives
- NASA SIPAG – Agricultural development programs
- NASA TIYAGA – Livelihood and employment opportunities
- NASA HUSAY – Community support for Calacazens
The Orange Health Card, medical assistance program that provides essential financial support for Calacazen families in need, has been one of his most successful projects.
Mayor Ona continues to steer Calaca’s political, socioeconomic, and cultural progress with a clear vision and concrete actions. As the city grows, it stays strongly anchored in its history while embracing advancement and creativity, solidifying its position as a thriving hub in Batangas.
