On Wednesday, October 2, Comelec spokesperson John Laudiangco stated that the ability to cancel an aspirant’s certificate of candidacy (COC) is limited to filtering out nuisance aspirants.
Hence, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) are unable to immediately disqualify former Bambam, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo if she runs, however they will review the numerous complaints towards her.
“‘Yung parte ng petition for disqualification, petition to cancel or deny due course ‘yung COC, hindi po po pwedeng Comelec ang magfafile po niya. Wala po motu proprio powers,” Laudiangco stated.
Nevertheless, Laudiangco advised the public to review the candidates’ COCs and consider factors other than their qualifications, including disqualification instances.
Laudiangco indicated that they are waiting for the Ombudsman’s verdict on whether Guo will face lifelong disqualification.
