Best known for her roles in Harry Potter and Downtown Abbey, actress Dame Maggie Smith has been remembered as “a true legend” on stage and screen. The actress died at the age of 89 on Friday, September 27.
King Charles himself paid his tributes, describing her as “a national treasure” while Ser Keir Starmer said she was “beloved by so many for her great talent”.
Smith’s co-star from Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe, thoughtfully acknowledges her as a “fierce intellect” with “a gloriously sharp tongue”.
Radcliffe said, “She was a fierce intellect, had a gloriously sharp tongue, could intimidate and charm in the same instant and was, as everyone will tell you, extremely funny.”
“I will always consider myself amazingly lucky to have been able to work with her, and to spend time around her on set.” Radcliffe added. “The word legend is overused but if it applies to anyone in our industry then it applies to her”.
Emma Watson shared an Instagram story where she remembered Smith as “real, honest, funny, and self-honouring”.
Another one of Smith’s co-stars in Harry Potter Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasely in the film franchise, said he felt “incredibly lucky to have shared a set with [Dame Maggie] and particularly lucky to have shared a dance” in a post on Instagram.
Smith and the legacy she left in the industry will be cherished for a long time. She served the audiences and her co-stars great projects and a role model to look up to.
