Buriram, Thailand, August 26, 2024 — During the 13th ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting (ASED), Philippine Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the importance of digital transformation in education to equip the youth in the region for upcoming challenges.
Angara highlighted the need for policymakers to focus on providing learners with the necessary skills and values to thrive in an increasingly digital environment. He emphasized the urgency of these initiatives as ASEAN approaches key milestones and prepares for post-2025 strategic plans.
While pushing for digital progress, Angara also stressed the human aspect of education, emphasizing the role of strong institutions, evidence-based policies, capable officials, and engaged stakeholders.
Under the SEAMEO Council Presidency, the Philippines has introduced various programs to drive digital transformation, including DepEd Digital Education 2028, CHED’s Higher Education Digital Integration, and TESDA’s Digital Skills Training in TVET. Angara underlined the importance of collaboration among ASEAN nations for educational success across the region.
The meeting also saw significant developments, such as the progress report on the ASEAN Work Plan on Education, the adoption of the ASEAN-SEAMEO Joint Declaration on Common Space in Southeast Asian Higher Education, and updates on the ASEAN Plus Three Guidelines on Student Exchange and Mobility.
